Affordable housing
INTERACTIVE DESIGN / ILLUSTRATION
Project overview
Affordable housing is costly to build and maintain, resulting in a significant gap between the expenses of constructing and operating these buildings and the rents that most people can afford. This project focused on explaining why it was so challenging without government intervention.
Giving controls to illustrate the difficulties
After walking readers through the story, we provided them with all the levers to adjust on their own. By giving them control the reader can play with the problem and see just how difficult it is to create affordable housing.
Playful tone
By gamifying the content we tried to encourage interaction about a very real problem facing our country. This product had widespread pick up by media outlets and was featured in housing advocacy organizations, used in university curriculum and referenced at the senate appropriations committee.
